Coogee House 2: An upper floor addition and alterations to a demi-detached house in Coogee NSW

This renovation of a semi-detached Coogee house included addition of any upper storey providing three bedrooms and two bathrooms. At the ground floor level (the street entry level) an open plan living room/kitchen/dining room was provided as well as a new bathroom. An existing griund floor front bedroom and associated sunroom were substantially retained, although refurbished. A new stair was provided between the lower ground floor plan and ground floor. New decking, planters and pergola were provided in the nothern yard.

Approval for this renovation was obtained from Randwick Council in the Eastern Suburbs of Sydney. The project was tendered by Dunn Architects.

An upper floor addition to this Coogee house is slightly elevated above street level due to the slope of the land down from the street. A curved wall with pronounced curved eaves above and below create a striking form on the street. The dual pavilion massing is also evident from the street.

The paired bands which protrude above and below the recessed ribbed clad walls cantilever to float above the retained portions of this Coogee house.

A vertical blade wall (left) unites the horizontal bands so as to wrap around the first floor walls of this Coogee house.

Located in a quiet Coogee street, the house is on a corner and was below street level. The post war semi has an unusual layout with the two semis attached at the street front, but parted at the rear either side of a courtyard which serves the renovated semi only.

Curved eaves and walls bookend both the street and backyard ends of this Coogee renovation.

Narrow steps (left) were originally the only access from the living rooms (right) down to a lower courtyard. As a result the courtyard was under-utilised, despite being located on the sunny north side.

By providing a deck over the courtyard the levels of the living rooms and outdoors matched, improving accessibility and usage.

A pergola was provided to facilitate shade structures and climbing plants.
